Outdoor Projects

So, why choose a professional as opposed to DIY

Many households now own a "pressure washer" and often upkeep their outdoor areas themselves. So, why instruct a professional company?

Household Pressure Washer      V         Commercial Grade Pressure Washer

1.4 KW Motor                                    6.5HP 4-stroke air cooling engine
Water Flow Rate 360Ltr/hr                            Water Flow Rate 750 Ltr/hr
Max. pressure 110bar                                 200 Bar Pump Pressure
4m High Pressure Hose                       Industrial quality 10m high pressure hose

These are just the basic comparisons. Obviously the commercial pressure washer is designed for heavy continuous use.

So, once we have pressure washed your driveway, patio etc, you then realise the sand has become loose. Now this will have to be replaced, removing the sand is ok down to a certain level, beyond that and you risk the chance of blocks becoming unsettled.
When the time is right, re-sanding can take place. Ensuring sand is brushed in evenly we then use a wacker plate to embed the sand, any loose sand is then mechanically dispersed of to ensure sealing will be smooth.
Sealing needs to be sprayed on using an airless sprayer which has Viton seals. two applications of professional seal must be applied at the correct angle to ensure even coverage.

To any good D.I.Y`ers Good luck, it is achievable with a lot of time and patience.
To anyone who appreciates their weekends to themselves to enjoy their precious time off, you know what to do...

So you`ve had your carpet cleaned?

Here are my top tips to keep your carpet looking clean and healthy, long after your carpet cleaner has left.

  • Invest in a good quality entrance mat. A high percentage of soiling will be removed simply by wiping your feet. (but vacuum this mat on a regular basis to keep it functioning)
  • Ask people to remove their shoes when possible.
  • Vacuum on a regular basis, daily if you have young children or pets.
  • Act upon spills and accidents immediately. The longer it soaks in, the harder it will be to remove...DON`T RUB a stain, it will only spread and look even more unsightly.
  • Treat the stain with a purpose bought carpet stain remover. Make sure it does not contain bleaching agents. For your best bet you should ask your carpet cleaners advice on which is the best to use.
  • Have booties/over shoes available for workmen or contractors who are working in your home (if they don`t supply their own)
  • Have your carpets cleaned on a regular basis by a professional company. Depending on how busy your home is, pets and children etc. this can be anything from 6 - 24 months.
  • Look after your carpet and in return it will look after you!!

Don`t Be Fooled!

Don`t be fooled
....into thinking you can create a maintenance free outdoor paving. Many people are under the assumption that once you have Block Paving, Indian Sandstone, Pattern Imprinted Concrete, Decking etc installed then that's it! No more gardening! No more weeding! No more cleaning!
This may have happened to you, your newly laid/installed driveway, patio looks lovely, initially. Proud to approach your home as your drive welcomes you. Happy to invite friends and family to your Bbq showing off your newly laid Indian Sandstone patio. Lovely new garden furniture on the decking. Then after a couple of seasons or so ....disappointment sets in. Your driveway has lost its welcoming appeal, weeds are awaiting you with open arms! Your patio has weathered, and decorated in moss. Your decking is also full of moss and slippery.
Don`t feel all is lost... we can help! We jet wash with a petrol driven power washer, re-sand block paving, and seal both block paving and Indian Sandstone paving. Jet wash decking to rid it of all moss and algae. We can re-colour pattern imprinted concrete. Restore tarmac drives and recoat them.
But then what? Your concern is the same will happen, Weeds, moss, dull, dirty..... not if you join our maintenance plan!
Many of our clients opt to join our maintenance from as little as £15 per month. We call out on a monthly basis
o January – Moss Prohibitor Application
o February – Moss Prohibitor Application
o March – Moss Prohibitor Application
o April – Detergent Application
o May – Weed Killer Treatment
o June – Weed Killer Treatment
o July – Weed Killer Treatment
o August – Weed Killer Treatment
o September – Weed Killer Treatment
o October – Detergent Application
o November – Moss Prohibitor Application

Your driveway, patio, decking, will stay looking like new for just a small monthly payment. This plan has proven very popular with our clients who are on it... they just love it! Your investment does become maintenance free to you with our monthly plan!
Why not call to arrange for a FREE No obligation quote TODAY!
Any quotes accepted during April (for works to commence when weather permits) and wish to join our Maintenance Plan will receive the 1st month FREE!

5 Second Rule

So, do you use the 5 second rule?

Studies have shown that bacteria found in E. coli and staphylococcus take between 3 and 30 seconds to transfer to commonly dropped foods...toast, pasta, biscuits, sweets etc which have landed on carpets, laminate, tiles etc. The type of flooring played a part in this time scale, stating that bacteria would more likely to transfer to these foods through moisture from tiled and laminate surfaces.

So, like it or not, we are all surrounded by dust mites.

So, in my last Blog, we discovered there is no major benefit to installing hard flooring throughout the house to alleviate us of these dreadful creatures. They are here and all we can do is make our homes more alien to them.
We are aware that, dry, clean, well maintained carpets can improve our air quality, but how?

Your carpet will trap and filter any air borne particles that fall to the ground naturally through gravity. All 2,000,000 of them. (average amount found in the UK home). Dust mites are way too small to be seen by the naked eye, but its not the mites themselves that cause allergies, it`s their faeces that can stay airborne for up to 10 minutes because of their lifeless weight.

Regular vacuuming with a powerful vacuum cleaner will remove the faeces, not all dust mites will be removed because of their strength and sticky substance  that allows them to cling to fibres. Also the fact they do not like light so will burrow down into the fibres of your carpets.

Hot Water Extraction todays most commonly used method of cleaning carpets and furniture will also help to give relief from these mites and their offerings.

And please, remember don`t have nightmares, we live with these creatures as have generations before us, but we now have the education to help ourselves.

Regular Vacuuming of:
*  Carpets,
*  Upholstery
*  Soft Furnishings
*  Mattress`s

*  Using Hot Water Extraction method for cleaning

Carpets v Hard Floor for allergy sufferers

Have you been influenced by wooden floor manufacturers to ditch your carpet for wooden floor replacements, for the sake of your health?

Carpets physically trap dust mites and allergens, till vacuumed away.On hard floors the allergens and dust mites have nowhere to go, and their faeces can remain air borne for up to 10 minutes, and with the slightest movement, they are easily inhaled.
It takes 10 times more air flow for dust particles to be moved across carpeted flooring than hard flooring.

The Carpet Foundation, The European Carpet Association, The Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand and The Carpet and Rug Institute of the USA have all studied the scientific papers on asthma and floor coverings. It was proved conclusively that there is no scientific evidence that carpets are a danger to our atmospheres including for those with allergies or sensitivity to dust mites, pollen etc.

Through natural gravity, your carpet will trap airborne particles

Walking on hard floor surfaces disturbs more dust particles than walking on carpeted surfaces, distributing them into the air to be inhaled.

Therefore there will be less dust in the atmosphere of a carpeted room.
Dry, clean well maintained carpets will actually improve your homes air quality.

There have been no studies conducted to prove that removing carpets improves the health of an allergy sufferer.

A study shows that in Sweden, an advertising campaign from a wooden floor manufacturer, caused hysteria among homeowners, resulting in a 77% reduction in carpet use, this coincided with a 300% increase in asthma suffers in the same 15 year period.

FACT! It is the faeces from the dust mite that causes the allergens, not the dust mite themselves. Vacuuming your carpet on a regular basis will remove a large  amount of these trapped particles.

Our next Blog will have help and advice on how to maintain your carpets and upholstery, and the best way of dealing and removing these pesky mites!

Celebrating Valentines Day - need not cost a fortune!

Valentine`s Day

February 14th

Valentine was a Roman priest put to death on February 14th, AD273 for refusing to give up his Christian faith. The day coincided with the Roman Spring festival, Lupercalia, held in honour of the gods Pan and Juno. Lupercalia was believed to be one of the most important festivals in the Roman calendar, and was brought to Britain by the Romans. The early Christian church frowned upon the festival but unable to prevent people from celebrating it, linked it with the name of St. Valentine, who became the Patron Saint of Lovers.

Unique Ways to Celebrate

* Have a meal with someone special, either be it in a restaurant, pub, or even home - make it really unique - turn off your mobile phone, both of you!

* Make a card, no need for negative comments then, as in  "waste of money them cards"

* Give a voucher...not the usual gift voucher make a personal one, for something even as simple as  - breakfast in bed, a country drive, a child free afternoon, anything that will make your       loved one know you have given some thought.

* Arrange to go back to visit where you met and did your "courting"

* Buy a rose/plant - a lot cheaper than flowers and lasts a lot longer. Try and pick a plant/rose with a name that is relevant to your loved one.

* Do you have lots of photos on your mobile? Get one printed and buy a simple frame - memories! (many 24 hour supermarkets offer this service if you`re running out of time!)

Above all... it`s only one day of the year, to some it is so special, to others its just a normal day - however you decide to spend it...... Enjoy!

Love To All Valentines

Water water water....everywhere!

Water, It`s plentiful at the moment and is literally just going down the drain.

Why not take time this weekend to invest in a water butt? Reasonably priced water butts are available in many varieties! Slim ones, basic ones, deluxe ones, stone effect, different shapes, even DIY ones. They are available in many DIY shops, and hardware stores. Easily installed on your house, shed, garage or any outbuilding with gutters and downpipes in place. Obviously water is stored for your use and convenience during the summer months.  I know it seems hard to imagine during our current weather conditions BUT should we have a hosepipe ban during the summer months then you can freely use any water collected in your water butt. Rain water is more beneficial to our plants than tap water. Rain water has natural nutrients that are cleaned with chlorine etc to make it safe for drinking from taps. It will be at the right temperature for your plants as opposed to cold water from the tap. Give it a go, and if you are on a water meter then you could be saving money too!

So, why not turn a negative into a positive and make good use of this wet weather?

Watch The Video "How To Install A Water Butt" For Ideas

Water Facts

  • On average a person in the UK uses 150 litres of water per day
  • Did you know that just 1 drip of water per second wastes around 5, 000 litres of water each year!
  • The roof of a four bedroom family home on average captures more than 100, 000 litres of rain water each year.
  • Turning off a running tap while brushing your teeth will save water! Leaving the tap on wastes 6 litres of water every minute.
  • Around 25% of the household’s energy bill comes from heating water
  • One third of our water is lost through leaky pipes before it even gets to our homes.
  • Did you know that 50% of water that is used within the household doesn’t need to be of potable water quality?
  • A four minute shower uses between 90 and 180 litres of water.
  • 63% of our daily consumption at home comes from the bathroom and the toilet
  • You can survive about a month without food, but only 5 to 7 days without water.

Its all around us, we take it for granted at times, and certainly could not live without it! So appreciate it and use it carefully!

Here`s hoping I will be doing a blog on sunshine soon!! Lets hope the sun is as plentiful in the summer as the rain has been this winter.

Happy New Year

2014 - So, what are/were your New Year Resolutions?

Lose weight?

Get fit?

Drink less?

Give up smoking?

Ohh we are all sinners according to our resolution lists, and as we are told, most things are OK in moderation. Do we really need to waste so much of our time trying to improve ourselves and our lifestyles? Compare ourselves to our peers, neighbours, friends, family? Maybe we should concentrate on being happy! My recommendations for easy resolutions that hopefully you can keep all year

OK maybe we need to lose a few pounds, but is it really worth going to the extreme of starving yourself, only to end up  craving foods that are deemed bad for you? Simply cutting back on fatty/sugary foods will aid with weight loss.

We all know that we need to exercise more, but a monthly membership at the gym will only increase your monthly out goings, not necessarily decrease your waist line, but taking a good walk a couple of times a week will help you lose weight and improve your heart. You may also get to know some of your local beauty spots and beaches, most of which are free of charge.

Yes....most of us drink too much and especially in the weeks that have just passed. OK, so now you have admitted to over doing the alcohol consumption just rectify it by introducing nice non alcoholic cocktails for your Saturday night. Try a nice hot chocolate with marshmallow and cream topping - OK still not good for calories, but will still be better for you than alcohol. Plus you will only drink one hot chocolate drink....unlike alcohol, when one drink inadvertently always leads to another.

Give up smoking - as  a non smoker I cannot comment on this but would like to say I know more and more people who are giving up for various reasons, each one has benefited massively in one way or another, and there is so much help out there now....go on, you never know if you can do it or not until you try.

So, here`s to a Healthy Happy 2014 to you all, and don't be too hard on those resolutions ....like rules, they are almost, certainly there to be broken!

Take Care
